How to Get Started in Barre
Here at The Mat, one of our most popular classes has become our barre classes. Many beginners start with our BarreFlow class and then take CardioBarre when they are looking for something a little more challenging. While we do have a lot of members coming in with previous barre experience, the majority are completely new to exercise! Some of the most common questions we get is "How do I get started in barre?" Of course, the easiest answer is to simply come and try out a class! We maintain a fun, no-judgement, teaching environment that makes everyone comfortable, regardless of experience level. After all, we all share some of the common goals of improving our physical health while having a good time! With all of that being said, we can give you a few tips so you have an idea of what to expect during your first barre class.
Another common question is "Do I need ballet experience to start barre?" Absolutely not! Of course, you may be a little more used to some of the movements, but anyone can participate in barre, regardless of past dance or ballet experience.
What is Barre?
Before you get started in barre (or just as a refresher!), it would help to have a background information. If you ask most people what they associate barre with, "ballet" will be the most common answer. Barre was started by a ballerina looking to recover from a physical injury in the 1950s. Since then, there have been many types of barre developed for different goals. The core of barre remains the same for the most part. Barre exercises help to slim, tone, and firm up, mostly with the use of body weight and small, controlled movements. Sometimes, light weights and other equipment can be used for specific purposes.
Of course, the most recognizable part of barre is the actual bar! The bar is used to help you with stability, balance, and even stretching. Again, because most of the exercises used focus on small movements with high repetition, the benefits of barre are unique. When you think of a dancer's body, you typically picture someone who is long, lean, and toned. The movements used in barre really excel in building control and improving posture, balance, and flexibility. This specific workout is also great for targeting muscles that do not get utilized in other traditional forms of exercise.
How to Get Started in Barre
So, now that you are ready to get started in barre, what should you know before your first class? One of the most common questions we get is asking what you should wear for your first barre class. You want to be comfortable, so we recommend your favorite pair of leggings or yoga pants, along with a tank top. Since you will be moving, you don't want any loose fitting clothing that can get in the way, so be sure to wear something form fitting. If you have sticky socks, you can wear those, but going bare foot is totally fine!
The most important advice is to prepare yourself mentally. Fortunately, this is extremely easy to do. Come in with an open mind willing to learn and listen. One great aspect of barre is developing a mind-muscle connection. If you've never focused on this before, it can take a little getting used to, but don't worry, the instructors are there to help you! Especially when focusing on some of the muscles that are not used much in daily life, you will gradually feel yourself developing better control over these muscles. The more open you come into the class, the more you will get out of it. Many people want to become an expert immediately, but as with any other discipline, it takes time. The reward is noticing the progress you are making and how quickly you will learn new things!
Don't be afraid to ask questions. With years of experience, our instructors are great at helping beginners with common mistakes. However, as good as they are, there are many times when you may have a question or want additional assistance. Chances are, another beginner or even more advanced class member may have the same question, so don't be shy!
Barre has become a favorite class for many students here. While many beginners may feel the need to gain some experience before they actually take a class, our instructors are experts at teaching all levels of experience.
