Many people realize that regular exercise comes with many physical benefits, but have you ever wondered about the mental benefits of exercise? There has been much research devoted to this topic and without a doubt, there are some significant mental benefits associated with exercise. Even just one exercise session releases endorphins in your brain that create a feeling of happiness. So just imagine what a regular exercise routine can do for you! So what other mental benefits of exercise have studies found?
Exercise acts to improve your mood in an attack from all sides. From physical changes in your brain, to improving your body image, to releasing chemicals in your body, it is pretty neat to see all of the ways in which physical activity can improve your mood! Some of these effects can be noticed instantly after an intense workout while others are a net effect, which take some time and regularity to build up. Either way, the mental benefits of exercise are undeniable.
Regular physical exercise can actually "rewire" your brain in a way that promotes an overall feeling of well-being. Studies have found that exercise can reduce brain inflammation and promote neural growth as well. Both of these help to fight depression as well as keep your brain healthy. While those effects require a regular and continued routine, there are some instant depression fighting benefits as well. Maybe you are experiencing situational depression after a particularly difficult event. Exercise can be a great way to get your mind off of the subject and let you cool down to address the situation in a more calm manner. In addition, the endorphins released can help you feel more positive in the moment.
In today's fast moving world, the number of people who report feeling stressed is at an all-time high. Work issues, family problems, school, deadlines, and more can contribute to feeling stressed. Taking out some time for yourself is a great way to relieve stress. Exercising produces norepinephrine which helps reduce stress levels. Again, exercising is a great way to get your focus off of something that is bothering you and instead focus on whatever exercise you may be doing. This is why certain disciplines, such as yoga, are so highly praised for their relaxation and calming effects. Concentrating in the moment will make you completely forget about whatever may be stressing you out!
If you aren't happy about the way you look, getting in shape can give you a big confidence boost. At the end of the day, only you can determine what your ideal body image is, but one thing is for sure. If you look good in your eyes, you'll feel good too! Whether you want to shed a couple of pounds or go for a total-body makeover, regular exercise can help you achieve the body image you desire.
When you walk into any type of fitness class, whether it is yoga, Pilates, barre, Zumba, or anything else, you instantly share at least one thing in common with everybody else in that room! Think about it, that is a pretty rare experience! In class environments, many members find new lifetime friends. Everyone feels good when they make a new friend, plus you have the added benefit of helping motivate each other!
Lack of sleep has a huge effect on your mood. All of us have experienced a night where we didn't get great sleep and felt cranky the next day. Compare that to a day where you helped a friend moved or spent the day doing yard work - I bet you slept like a log! Physical activity is a great way to help improve both the quality and the quantity of sleep you get. Exercise will help you fall asleep faster, as well as sleep more deeply. With all of the negative effects of not getting enough sleep, this one reason is enough for many to exercise!
While these are only five mental benefits of exercise, there are many more! In addition to the ones we've gone over, exercise has been shown to improve cognitive ability, keep your memory sharp, and even help with addiction. With busy schedules, it may seem like you don't have time to add exercise into your daily routine, but even a few hours a week will improve your mental well-being.

How to Get Started in Barre
Here at The Mat, one of our most popular classes has become our barre classes. Many beginners start with our BarreFlow class and then take CardioBarre when they are looking for something a little more challenging. While we do have a lot of members coming in with previous barre experience, the majority are completely new to exercise! Some of the most common questions we get is "How do I get started in barre?" Of course, the easiest answer is to simply come and try out a class! We maintain a fun, no-judgement, teaching environment that makes everyone comfortable, regardless of experience level. After all, we all share some of the common goals of improving our physical health while having a good time! With all of that being said, we can give you a few tips so you have an idea of what to expect during your first barre class.
Another common question is "Do I need ballet experience to start barre?" Absolutely not! Of course, you may be a little more used to some of the movements, but anyone can participate in barre, regardless of past dance or ballet experience.
What is Barre?
Before you get started in barre (or just as a refresher!), it would help to have a background information. If you ask most people what they associate barre with, "ballet" will be the most common answer. Barre was started by a ballerina looking to recover from a physical injury in the 1950s. Since then, there have been many types of barre developed for different goals. The core of barre remains the same for the most part. Barre exercises help to slim, tone, and firm up, mostly with the use of body weight and small, controlled movements. Sometimes, light weights and other equipment can be used for specific purposes.
Of course, the most recognizable part of barre is the actual bar! The bar is used to help you with stability, balance, and even stretching. Again, because most of the exercises used focus on small movements with high repetition, the benefits of barre are unique. When you think of a dancer's body, you typically picture someone who is long, lean, and toned. The movements used in barre really excel in building control and improving posture, balance, and flexibility. This specific workout is also great for targeting muscles that do not get utilized in other traditional forms of exercise.
How to Get Started in Barre
So, now that you are ready to get started in barre, what should you know before your first class? One of the most common questions we get is asking what you should wear for your first barre class. You want to be comfortable, so we recommend your favorite pair of leggings or yoga pants, along with a tank top. Since you will be moving, you don't want any loose fitting clothing that can get in the way, so be sure to wear something form fitting. If you have sticky socks, you can wear those, but going bare foot is totally fine!
The most important advice is to prepare yourself mentally. Fortunately, this is extremely easy to do. Come in with an open mind willing to learn and listen. One great aspect of barre is developing a mind-muscle connection. If you've never focused on this before, it can take a little getting used to, but don't worry, the instructors are there to help you! Especially when focusing on some of the muscles that are not used much in daily life, you will gradually feel yourself developing better control over these muscles. The more open you come into the class, the more you will get out of it. Many people want to become an expert immediately, but as with any other discipline, it takes time. The reward is noticing the progress you are making and how quickly you will learn new things!
Don't be afraid to ask questions. With years of experience, our instructors are great at helping beginners with common mistakes. However, as good as they are, there are many times when you may have a question or want additional assistance. Chances are, another beginner or even more advanced class member may have the same question, so don't be shy!
Barre has become a favorite class for many students here. While many beginners may feel the need to gain some experience before they actually take a class, our instructors are experts at teaching all levels of experience.
If you are looking to take a barre class in Somerset County, NJ, be sure to stop by our studio located in Martinsville, NJ! See our class schedule and drop in if you want to check out a class!

What Are the Benefits of Yoga?
Although yoga has been around in the United States since the early 1900s, in the past 20 years, the popularity of yoga has skyrocketed. Every day, more and more people are introducing themselves to the benefits of yoga. It may sound cliché, but yoga is really one of those things you need to experience in order to appreciate it!
Once seen as an activity solely for women, the appeal of yoga has spread to every type of person imaginable. If you ask a non-yogi what benefits they would expect from yoga, you would undoubtedly hear about relaxation and flexibility. Practicing yogis know that these are just the start! So, what other benefits of yoga can you expect?
Physical Benefits of Yoga
Strength - With the evolution of yoga has come many goal-specific types of yoga. For example, here at The Mat, we offer PowerFlow and Core Yoga. These classes focus on poses that strengthen your body and give you a good workout. Many people immediately think of the gym when they think about improving physical strength. However, if you've ever attempted body weight exercises such as pull-ups, push-ups, or squats, you know how great of a workout it can be! Furthermore, the balance it takes to hold many of these poses help to build your stabilizer muscles. Many of these muscles do not get used in a typical exercise routine.
Balance - Continuing where we left off talking about strength, your balance can greatly be improved through yoga. From basic poses that shift your weight while on both feet to advanced positions such as holding yourself in a headstand, balance is a fundamental skill involved in yoga. As you practice yoga more, you will notice your balance improving.
Cardiovascular Health - Many newcomers are shocked when they find themselves sweating after a good yoga class! Yoga really gets your blood flowing and helps to improve your circulation. There have been multiple studies that show improved heart health in yoga practitioners. With heart disease being the number one cause of death in the US, it is no wonder so many people are turning to yoga.
Stress Reduction - There is a good reason that many yoga classes, such as our ZenFlow class, mix some meditation in with yoga. In practice, there are many similarities between the two activities. Both meditation and yoga incorporate focus, breathing techniques, and relaxation. Consistency with this practice helps to lower stress and keep positive throughout the day.
Improved Concentration - Again, tying in meditation with yoga, both practices focus on being in the moment. When you focus on the moment, you train your ability to focus and concentrate on the task at hand. In a world where everything seems to move at the speed of light, this hugely helps with all of the daily distractions one may experience.
While this article only touches on some of the broad benefits of yoga, there are countless others that yogis experience. For example, people have experienced improvements with conditions like arthritis, chronic back pain, PTSD, and insomnia. One of the reasons yoga is so popular is because of the many variations that exist. Just like building an exercise routine that targets your specific goal (weight loss, building muscle, cadio health), you can tailor your yoga program to your own needs.
Indeed, yoga is a form of exercise for both the mind and the body. As you get more proficient in yoga, the benefits become more noticeable and more widespread. Building a good foundation that allows you to comfortably improve and progress. Here at The Mat, we offer a full range of yoga classes from beginner to advanced. Contact us online or call us today to take advantage of our new member special! For only $49, take unlimited classes for 30 days!
